Over spring break I saw a really cool band called Sammy Rae and the Friends. There were a ton of super cool moments throughout the show. The style of the band’s music is like jazz, but also infused with contemporary and pop music components. She sang songs about being Queer, growing up, and the importance of treating the people around you with love. She also emphasized the importance of listening. She said, “It’s time we start listening to women. It’s time to start listening to LGBTQIA+ people, It's time to start listening to POC, and trans folks.” I think that was the most impactful moment of the whole concert. Not only that, but the band strived to create an environment where everyone felt welcome, no matter what they looked like. I feel like concert environments can sometimes get dangerous, and people will get feisty and competitive over the views on the floor. But I feel like that really wasn’t the case at this venue. The band has made clear that they don’t have fans, they have friends. Their mantra is really special on their website. “GO PUT A SMILE ON SOMEBODY’S FACE, GO TELL SOMEBODY THEY’VE GOT A PLACE IN THIS WORLD, GO TELL SOMEBODY YOU WANNA BE FRIENDS WITH THEM.” Everyone was so happy to be there, passing out sparkles to each other to put on our faces, and singing along together. I have only been to one other concert when I was in 6th grade, so this was an amazing experience. I have a lot of emotional attachment to each song, especially Jackie Onassis and Living Room Floor. The lyrics in both of those are so moving, and I take them very personally. I think Sammy Rae and the Friends is a great group of people. Their whole vibe is so eclectic and magnetic. They are inclusive, and kind. More music groups need to be like them. I think because they are led by such a fearless, strong, woman makes them better.
