Just a disclaimer, I don’t support JK Rowling, I think she is transphobic, and it is unfortunate that she is the author of my favorite book series. In this blog post, I am also including Emma Watson's remarks on JK Rowling’s disgusting comments. With that being said, I now want to talk about why Hermione Granger is one of my favorite feminist characters depicted in literature. I think she is a character that all young girls need to read about. As a child, I read books like The Secret Garden and The Giver. Although those books were great, they were missing a strong, smart, female protagonist. I found the character I was searching for in Harry Potter. Hermione was the character I needed. To me, she was more than a sidekick, more than a brave friend. She possessed amazing qualities, and embraced who she was. I loved how smart she was. Like Hermione, as a child, my nose was usually in a book. I admired how intelligent she was, and that her wittiness and clever comments weren’t hidden. Throughout the books, she sustained herself. She remained independent, and never relied on other people to help her. She showed me that you could be friends with boys platonically. It was wonderful to see a character who was just as strong as the other boy characters, if not more. But my favorite thing about Hermione is that she never apologizes for who she is. That is something I struggle with. When I take charge, or loudly exclaim things, I find myself apologizing and correcting my behavior. Hermione showed me that that is not behavior that needs to be changed. I am thankful that characters like Hermione had a part in raising me, because I would not be who I am without her.
